Show Racism the Red Card

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD

On Wednesday 5th December, year 6 were invited to the Show Racism the Red Card educational event with Bristol Rovers Football Club. Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity that provide educational workshops with the purpose of tackling racism in society through the high-profile status of football and football players.

The day started with a welcome and introduction by the Show Racism the Red Card and club staff along with other schools from around Bristol.

We then attended the first workshop on Hate Crime. The children completed a survey about their understanding of the meaning and law of Hate Crime, discussed whether different scenarios counted as hate crime and then learnt about how to identify and report it.

Next, the children had a ground tour of the Bristol Rivers Football Ground. They we shown the amazing view of Bristol from the top of the viewing stands, visited the VIP boxes and went inside the players locker rooms. The children also learnt about club and grounds history.

 The final workshop was about racism, including stereotyping and terminology. The children worked in groups to match pictures of people to titles, such as; ‘Gold medalist’, ‘teacher’, ‘tattoo artist’ and ‘terrorist’. Everyone was surprised to find out that most of them had matched the majority of the pictures to the titles incorrectly. We then discussed how stereotypes can  impact on the way that we judge people based on their physical appearances.

After lunch, the children watched a film Show Racism the Red Card produced to help promote a message of understanding, which featured professional football players such as Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto’o and Ryan Giggs and addressed a range of issues surrounding racism.

At the end of The day, the children met  Bristol Rover footballers players and participated in a competition which challenged them to ask the most creative question they could think of about the issues they had learnt about that day to the players. One of the winners (who won a signed football and T-shirt) was from Cabot for their fantastic question about Nelson Mandela. Everyone else was also lucky enough to receive a signed photo from the football players as well.

Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented - Adventure Golf

This academic year, we are continuing to focus our gifted and talented PE sessions on extending pupil’s experiences of different sports and exercise activities.

On Monday 19th November, 8 children from year 5  participated in adventure golf at Rumble Jumble. 

The children were split into 2 groups and each were given a scoring card. For both courses, the children had to complete 18 holes, which included a number of challenges, such as; hills, holes and awkward angles to aim around.

Although the majority of the group had not ever experienced golf before, they were absolute naturals.
